Understand the Effectiveness Matrix
The Effectiveness Matrix helps you understand how engagement and the work environment together influence team performance.
It combines two dimensions:
-
Engagement: How motivated and connected employees feel in their work.
-
Performance Environment: The conditions that enable employees to perform effectively.
By combining these dimensions, the matrix shows how teams are positioned and where follow‑up may have the greatest impact.
Where to find the Effectiveness Matrix
You can find the matrix on the Overview page of the Results Dashboard. It is only available if your survey includes the required questions from the Engagement and Performance Environment themes needed to calculate the Effectiveness score.

Reading the matrix
The matrix shows the current placement of the selected group based on its Engagement and Performance Environment scores.
If results from a previous survey are available, it also shows the previous placement, allowing you to quickly see how the group’s effectiveness has changed over time.

The four areas of the matrix
Each team appears in one of four areas:
-
Effective: Engagement and the Performance Environment are both strong.
-
Not fully utilized: Employees are motivated, but elements of the Performance Environment may limit their ability to perform at their best.
-
Detached: The foundations for performance are present, but engagement is lower.
-
Ineffective: Both engagement and the Performance Environment require attention.
Exploring the matrix in more detail
Clicking the matrix opens a side panel where you can explore the results further.
The side panel includes two tabs:
-
Overview: Displays the matrix again with additional context, including benchmark comparisons.
-
Underlying groups: Shows a list view of the groups one level below the currently selected group, organised by quadrant so you can quickly compare teams.
Below, you can also view the Engagement and Performance Environment scores and compare them with your selected benchmark.
Advice based on the matrix
The side panel also provides contextual follow‑up advice based on where the selected team is plotted. This advice reflects the team’s specific situation and suggests where follow‑up may be most useful.
It helps leaders set clear and proportional expectations for follow‑up, focusing attention where it can have the greatest impact.
