Available Question Types in the Question Library

The new Question Library feature is currently accessible in view-only mode and is not yet available to all users. When reviewing these articles, please keep in mind that certain functionalities may still be unavailable.

What are the question types?

In survey questionnaires, the types of questions you include can significantly affect the quality and accuracy of the responses you receive. Effectory is using different kind of question types in the library. These are the most used question types:

Likert Scale (5-point scale)

Likert scales are suitable for questions that measure the intensity of agreement or disagreement, satisfaction levels, or the frequency of certain behaviors or attitudes. They are particularly effective when you want to capture a range of opinions.

Example: "I feel that I fit in at my organization?" or "I believe my organization is making improvements to meet customer expectation".

Answer scale: the scale ranges from "Strongly Disagree", "Disagree", "Neither agree nor disagree", "Agree" to "Strongly Agree".

Reporting: Reported as average score.

Scale 1-10 with Smiley changing expressions

This scale combines numerical precision with visual engagement. It is suitable for questions that involve subjective assessments, satisfaction, or mood. It can convey a sense of sentiment without requiring detailed written responses.

Example: A typical question that uses the smiley as an answer scale is the eNPS question: "How likely is it that you would recommend [Company name] as an employer to others?" (with a corresponding smiley face that changes from sad to happy as the score increases).

Answer scale: The default answer scale connected to this type goes from "very unlikely" to "very likely".

Reporting: Reported as average score.

Please note: At Effectory the eNPS question is currently the only question that can use this question type.

Simple Yes or No answer possibility

Use a binary "Yes" or "No" scale for questions that require straightforward, fact-based answers. It is suitable for closed-ended questions where there are only two possible responses.

Example: "Did you attend the recent company event?".

Answer scale: Yes - No.

Reporting: Reported in percentages.

Open-ended questions

Open-ended questions are used when you want respondents to provide detailed, written responses in their own words. They are suitable for capturing in-depth insights, opinions, suggestions, and feedback. Open-ended questions are often used for qualitative data collection.

Example: "If you could give [Company name] one tip, what would it be?”.

Answer scale: An open text field where respondents can type their answer.

Reporting: Answers are shown exactly as they were written down by the respondents.

Good to know

Changing the question type

It is not possible to change the question type for the standard Effectory library questions. However, if you make use of custom questions, you are free to choose the answer scale for your custom question.
Please read the guidelines for creating custom questions carefully: How to create effective custom questions – Effectory

What are negatively formulated questions?

Negatively formulated questions contain negative wording, which can confuse respondents and lead to inaccurate answers. For example:

  • Positive Formulation: "How satisfied are you with our service?"
  • Negative Formulation: "How dissatisfied are you with our service?"

We strongly advise against using negatively formulated questions as they can significantly affect your results. Please keep this in mind when creating custom questions. Although these types of questions will appear in the results dashboard, the results are misleading and cannot be used for proper analysis. This is why Effectory does not include negatively formulated questions in the standard Effectory Library.
